Commemorating Juneteenth 2023

Participate in an essay contest sponsored by Salem Keizer NAACP Branch-1166

Open to:

Elementary school students – approximately ½ - 1 page – prize of $100

Middle school students – approximately 2 pages – prize of $200

High School students – approximately 3 pages – prize of $300

Essay Questions:

1. How does society shape our personal, individual identities? What

is a person to do when society tells them that they are lesser for

something they have no control over, such as being born with a

particular skin color?

2. Do you think schools do a good job of teaching American history

through the perspective of Black people? Why or why not?

The deadline to submit an essay is June 6.

Winners will be announced on June 13.

Additional Info

Rubrics for evaluating essays include understanding and content, organization,

mechanics, originality (expression of theme in creative ways). Essay types may be

exposition, description, narrative, compare-contrast, or persuasive.
